No Yellow Fever Card? No Problem. Uganda Just Changed the Rules.
Visiting Uganda is getting easier day by day and guess what, a few days the government waived the mandatory Yellow fever vaccine card requirement for everyone entering the country through any point.
As of August 2026, Uganda’s Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that travelers entering the country are not required to show a yellow fever vaccination certificate.
The official clarification, published on October 2, 2026 by the National Citizenship and Immigration Control (NCIC) puts it plainly the yellow card “is no longer a mandatory requirement for entry into Uganda.”
For years, Uganda required all arriving travellers over nine months of age to carry an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) the little yellow booklet proving you’d been vaccinated against yellow fever.
Immigration officers checked it at ports of entry, including Entebbe International Airport and this has now stopped.
The NCIC noted that the requirement doesn’t even appear on Uganda’s e-visa portal anymore. If you show up at Entebbe without a yellow card, you won’t be turned away.
What hasn’t changed: yellow fever is still a real health risk in Uganda. The disease is mosquito-borne, and Uganda is one of 27 African countries considered high-risk. The WHO and CDC still recommend the vaccine they just can’t make you show the certificate at the border anymore.
Getting jabbed before you travel is still the sensible thing to do. It’s a single-dose, lifelong vaccine. It’s worth it.
But if you already had your trip planned and the yellow card was the missing piece? You’re clear to go.
What You Actually Need to Enter Uganda
Now that one requirement is off the list, here’s the short version of what you do need:
The essentials:
– A passport valid for at least six months beyond your entry date
– A Uganda e-Visa (applied online at Uganda’s official immigration portal before travel)
– A return or onward ticket
– Basic proof of where you’re staying
That’s it for most visitors. No yellow card. No compulsory vaccination certificate of any kind.
Why This Matters for Uganda Tourism and for You
Uganda’s tourism industry has been growing steadily and moves like this signal that the country is actively removing friction for visitors. Fewer barriers at the border means more people actually making the trip, which is good for Uganda’s parks, its communities, and the experiences on offer.
For the traveller, the practical impact is simple: your pre-trip to-do list just got shorter. No scrambling to find a yellow fever clinic. No waiting for a certificate to arrive. No anxiety at immigration about whether your card will be accepted.
And Uganda has plenty of reasons to visit without any extra hassle. Mountain gorillas in Bwindi. The thundering Nile at Murchison Falls. Tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Chimpanzees in Kibale Forest. Crater lakes in western Uganda that most tourists never reach because they don’t have a car.
That last part brings us to the most important decision of your trip.
Why rent a car in Uganda
Guided tours are fine. But Uganda’s best moments tend to happen in between on a red dirt road between parks, at a roadside market you weren’t expecting or pulling over because a family of baboons has decided the tarmac is theirs.
A rental car gives you that. Here’s what self drive car rental in Uganda unlocks:
Freedom from fixed schedules: Game drives in national parks are often timed.
A private vehicle means you stay as long as the lions are still interesting.
Access to places tours skip: Lake Mutanda, amabere Caves, the crater lakes, the Ssese Islands ferry crossing. These aren’t on most group itineraries. They’re on yours.
Better value for groups: Split a 4×4 between three or four travelers and you’re paying less per person than a mid-range tour, with full control of your time.
The road itself: Uganda is genuinely beautiful. The drive from Kampala to Fort Portal through the tea estates takes about four hours. Nobody who’s done it has wished they’d slept through it on a bus.
